Registration vs. Deregistration in Berlin – What You Need to Know

If you’re moving to Berlin or leaving Germany, one key step is often overlooked until the last minute: registering or deregistering your address. Known as Anmeldung and Abmeldung, these two bureaucratic processes can be confusing – especially for expats. Here's what you need to know.


What is Anmeldung?

Anmeldung is the official registration of your residence when you move into a new address in Berlin. It’s a legal requirement, and you'll need proof of registration for everything from opening a bank account to getting a SIM card.

You must register within 14 days of moving in.

Documents required:

1. Completed registration form

2. Your passport or ID

3. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation)



    What is Abmeldung?

    Abmeldung is the process of deregistering your address when you leave Germany permanently. It’s required by law and helps you avoid future tax or insurance obligations.

    You should deregister no earlier than 7 days before and no later than 14 days after moving out.

    Documents required:

    1. Abmeldung form

    2. Passport or ID

    Good to know: If you're moving within Germany, you do not need to deregister – just register your new address.
