Leaving Germany Checklist (2026) – Everything You Need to Do Before You Leave
Leaving Germany sounds simple — until you realise how many things need to be taken care of before you go.
For expats, the process can be especially confusing: deregistration (Abmeldung), cancelling contracts, dealing with authorities and making sure nothing is left behind.
👉 Important to know: Most contracts and obligations do not end automatically when you leave Germany.
This checklist gives you a clear and structured overview of everything you need to do before leaving Germany — so you can avoid unnecessary stress and unexpected costs.
1. Deregister Your Address in Germany (Abmeldung)
Before leaving Germany, you must officially deregister your residence in Berlin (Abmeldung) .
- ✔ Required for authorities, insurance and cancellations
- ✔ Can be completed fully remotely in Berlin
- ✔ You receive an official confirmation (Abmeldebestätigung)
👉 What many expats don’t know: Deregistration in Berlin can be done without visiting the Bürgeramt.
2. Cancel Your Contracts in Germany
Leaving Germany does not automatically cancel your contracts.
- Internet & phone contracts
- Electricity & utilities
- Health insurance
- Gym memberships
- Subscriptions
👉 Important to know: Many providers require your deregistration confirmation to accept early cancellation. Without it, contracts often continue running.

3. Cancel Rundfunkbeitrag (TV Tax)
The German broadcasting fee does not stop automatically.
👉 Often overlooked: You may continue receiving payment requests even after leaving Germany if you don’t cancel it properly.
4. Inform Your Health Insurance
This is one of the most important steps for expats.
👉 Important to know: If not cancelled correctly, you may still be charged even after leaving Germany.
5. Notify Employer, Tax Office & Authorities
- Employer
- Tax office (Finanzamt)
- Pension system (if applicable)
👉 Good to consider: Proper deregistration helps avoid issues with taxes or official communication later on.
6. Review Bank Accounts & Ongoing Payments
- Bank accounts
- Direct debits
- Online subscriptions
👉 Often overlooked: Many payments continue unnoticed if not actively cancelled.
7. Keep Important Documents
- ✔ Deregistration confirmation
- ✔ Cancellation confirmations
- ✔ Insurance documents
These documents are often required later — for taxes, new registrations or administrative processes abroad.
Leaving Germany without stress
If this feels like a lot — that’s because it is.
Most expats don’t struggle with one single step, but with the combination of bureaucracy, language barriers and multiple providers.
